United States Army Case Study
Organization: United States Army
Industry: Defense
Employees: 1.2 million
Geography: 5 continents
Overview
With almost 1 million uniformed personnel and 265K civilian employees operating on 5 continents, the United States Army is the largest branch of the United States military. Their operations cover a broad spectrum of activities from combat operations to infrastructure engineering. Viewed another way, the U.S. Army is a logistics organization only rivaled in size by Walmart and Amazon.
Sage Solutions Consulting has worked with the U.S. Army since 2013.
*** The sensitive nature of our work with the Army limits our ability to share certain information. This case study does include general challenges and our solutions.
The Challenges
The U.S. Army is heavily invested in SAP. They use SAP’s ERP, GCSS, LMP and and SAP is the foundation of their EBS-C that is consolidating multiple ERP systems into a single platform.
That understood, SAP is not the only platform and the technology challenges of an organization this size are many, diverse and dynamic over time. The data infrastructure and exchange required to operate an organization like the US Army is massive and not uniform. Sequentially, the associated security is equally complex. Like many organizations, different types of data are generated, transported and stored across many systems with an equally disparate set of access protocols and classifications. And, the technology needed is constantly expanding. Finally, as a government organization audits and various compliance exercises are required.
Solutions
While SSC’s role with the U.S. Army has varied based on changing priorities and needs, in general terms, we work to constantly improve data interoperability within existing systems and plan for improved data sharing and compatibility in new initiatives. We provide functional guidance on security processes and protocols around standards, processes and compliance. Our work has produced a 45% improvement in cost efficiencies by performing 3rd party resource audits. We also helped to achieve a 70% improvement in application security implementations costs by streamlining the evaluation and development process. In addition to reducing actual development costs, this reduces time from development to approved use lowering TCO.
