OVERVIEW:
Waste management is all the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. Waste management includes collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation. Our Waste Management partner has over twenty-five thousand employees and uses information technology extensively to support the delivery and optimisation of services.

THE CHALLENGE:
Our partner needed to be able to process billions of GPS events across their fleet operations to identify, among other things, vehicles/drivers who were idle on a route. The legacy solution (Oracle + Netezza*) required almost a full day to provide results.  * Netezza was already the enterprise data warehouse, however, attempts to simultaneously process over one terabit (TB) of data and the other reporting/analytical business process SLA’s required optimisation. Sage Solutions Consulting was therefore engaged to address our partner’s unique needs.

THE SOLUTION:
Hadoop® was chosen for its flexibility and scalability to process all the GPS events and log data for each vehicle/driver.  Once Hadoop® processed these billions of transactions, the resultant data sets were loaded into the Netezza data warehouse for extremely heightened analytical and operational reporting.  The solution required an application framework that allowed different types of processing workloads to interact within a common pool of storage data.

THE RESULTS:
Sage Solutions Consulting’s Hadoop® solution provided our partner with the ability to optimise and refine routeing and scheduling operations integrating real-time GPS data. Our engagement accelerated analytical applications and our client’s ability to access all enterprise data in both batch and real-time modes.  This allows them to better serve customers while enhancing financial management and competitive advantage.
